Our second once-in-a-lifetime expedition to the Falklands, South Georgia, and Antarctica

Background

Last December, after three years of delays and anticipation, we set off on an Antarctic expedition to our seventh continent. This once in a lifetime trip was a 21 day expedition to the Falklands, South Georgia, and Antarctica. It exceeded our expectations in every way. Well, except for the part where we both got Covid and had to quarantine in our cabin for 5 days. The silver lining? Our expedition company (Aurora Expeditions) gave us a credit for a future voyage. This is how we found ourselves headed to Antarctica for our second expedition cruise of 2023.

The map highlights key locations such as King George Island, Port Lockroy, and Paradise Bay, as well as specific sites in South Georgia like Stromness, Grytviken, and Gold Harbour. The route crosses the Drake Passage and Scotia Sea, with various landings and exploration points marked along the journey.

This year’s Antarctic expedition followed the same itinerary on the same ship (the Greg Mortimer), but in reverse and with two extra days. As before, I didn’t want to stress over potential flight delays and cancellations, so we decided to arrive a little early. The only frequent flyer tickets available had us arriving a full two weeks ahead of time, which gave us the perfect opportunity to revisit Torres del Paine.
