Day 7: To the Glacier
From Westport, we headed down the west coast of the South Island. The coastline here is breathtaking – steep cliffs, boulder-filled bays, and crashing surf. Our first stop was the blowholes and Pancake Rocks near Punakaiki. After a bit of a walkabout, we continued on, decided to head for Franz Joseph Glacier. There was a lot of damage from Cyclone Ita, and we got stopped in a road stop or two where they were trying to restore power. We took a bit of a risk and didn’t book anything in advance, but luckily we arrived early and there was still space. The heater only works when plugged in to external power, and it would have been super cold had we not found a powered site. The teen group turned up around dinner again, but we were sneaky this time and asked about their itinerary. This would be the last we see of them.
