First Time in Sydney

When we decided to move to Australia, we had our choice between Melbourne and Sydney. We’d never been to either, and due to timing we wouldn’t be able to visit. We did some research, and in the end decided on Melbourne because it was a little cheaper and seemed to be easier to get around.

I travel a bit for work (ha !), so the first work trip I had to Sydney, I arranged for my meetings to be on Friday so we could make a weekend of it.

• We stayed at the Intercontinental, mainly because it is one of the ones on my company list. This hotel is quite nice, and you simply can’t beat the location – literally blocks from Circular Quay.
• We had an outstanding meal at Cafe Sydney. Everything was perfect: the view from our table, the food, the wine, and the weather. Yeah – it’s pricey, but it was worth it. We offset this with a cheap but awesome street pies the next night at Harry’s Cafe de Wheels. This was actually our first exposure to meat pies. I guess they are kind of like little individual shepherd’s pies, but different: pastry and beef, but then topped with mushy peas and mashed potatoes and gravy. If it was good enough for Anthony Bourdain, it’s good enough for us.
• We did the bridge climb. Yeah it is touristy. And expensive. But is was freaking awesome and unforgettable. It took about four hours including preparation, the climb, etc. but it was very well run, safe, and not too strenuous.
• We took the ferry out to Manly Beach. It takes about 45 minutes but seems a world away. The views of the harbour are spectacular, and we took a nice walk over to Shelly Beach for brekkie.
