Top Five Images of 2015

In the spirit of end of year reflections, I thought I’d post my favourite images from 2015. It was an interesting exercise, as we shot more than 11,000 images this year (not including those shot as part of a time-lapse). So here goes – my (and your) favourite images from 2015.

Not the shot I came for

Closing the gate

The entire reason that we traveled to Ranthamnbore (India) was to see tigers, and we weren’t sure if we’d be lucky enough to spot one. We were in the right place at the right time though, and had some fabulous sightings. That said, my favourite image from the trip doesn’t contain a spotted cat. On Wednesdays, the locals (hundreds of thousands of people) visit the Ganesha Temple inside the park. The park rangers opened the gate for us to enter, and as we drove through I turned around and saw this scene.

Finally “getting” night sky photography

Wilson's Prom

Last year, we did a night sky photography workshop and we’ve pretty much been hooked ever since. We meticulously watch moon phases and cloud conditions, as well as nearby dark sky locations. We’ve been skunked a few times, but the weekend in Wilson’s Prom turned out to be a ripper.

Learning to make the best of it

Cape Otway

On the last moonless weekend before the arch of the Milky Way disappeared for the season, we headed to Cape Otway. After a nice sunset, the clouds rolled in and thwarted our plans. We checked every few hours all night long, but they weren’t budging. No luck with the night sky, but the sunrise was phenominal.

Taking advantage of work trips

Long Bien Market

I travel a lot for work, and often times to some pretty interesting places. A lot of times, all I get to see is the airport, the hotel, and the client’s office. I promised myself that Hanoi would be different, and to force myself to get out of the hotel, I booked a few sunrise tours. Though I was completely sleep deprived, it was worth it.

The new Sony and apartment living

At the end of the year, we moved from a cottage in South Melbourne/Albert Park to an apartment in Port Melbourne. Why? The view. This was also around the same time that we finally made the leap to mirrorless and fell in love with the Sony A7Rii (especially the time-lapse app).
