Swimming with Sea Lions
(Location: South Australia, Australia)
For the long Labour Day weekend, we made a quick trip to Port Lincoln.
Located in South Australia, Port Lincoln is a pretty easy trip from Melbourne (fly to Adelaide and then hop a prop-plane for another hour). We planned this at the last minute and had a VERY difficult time trying to find somewhere to stay. We would up in a three bedroom apartment at the Marina Hotel. It was way more space than we needed, but it was right on the water and basically footsteps from where the charters depart.
The sea lion swim is a half day excursion, which we did three days in a row.
- Day 1 – 1pm charter with Calypso. We went to Hopkins, which was a bit rough which churned up the water. Sea lions were very playful and interactive.
- Day 2 – 8am charter with Adventure Bay. We went to Hopkins and it was perfectly still, and the sea lions were super interactive.
- Day 3 – 8am charter with Adventure Bay. There was a swell so we went to Blyth Island. It was really shallow in parts, and the sea lions were a little standoffish at first. After a half hour or so they were very playful though.

This area is also known for great white cage diving, but they hadn’t seen any in over a month so we’ll have to go back for that.
