A Sticky Weekend in Charleston

August 2001 found us in Charleston for Andy’s birthday. We got a screaming deal online and stayed at the Meeting Street Inn.

Our luggage was “misplaced” and did not arrive until noon on Friday, so we walked around the first day in our “city clothes”. Quite a sight to see Andy and I in our “summer black” walking around in 100% humidity. A waitress thought that we were German.

We spent an afternoon at “Wired & Fired” – a bar where you can paint your own ceramics. We had dinner Friday night at Cypress, an excellent restaurant on Broad Street. Saturday we went to the aquarium and saw the IMAX movie Kelp Forest. We did a carriage ride that afternoon with Old South Carriages. Note: the carriage paths are on the lottery system – they draw a bingo ball to determine which path through the city to take to control carriage traffic. We were disappointed that we didn’t get the Battery Tour, but our tour through the older part of town had just as many interesting sites. Dinner Saturday was an Slightly North of Broad (SNOB) – one of our favorites from a few summers ago. Sunday we walked around the Battery and Rainbow Row for a long time – marveling at the architecture and lovely view of the ocean. We had a few hours to kill before our flight, so we took the ferry to Fort Sumpter – a definite must for great views of the city from the water.
