36 Hours in Rome
(Location: Rome, Italy)
(In 2000, I was commuting from Raleigh to Austin for work most weeks. Due to corporate policies, this meant flying via Dallas or Chicago, and usually home on Thursday nights. Most weeks, flights were overbooked and the airline would ask for volunteers to take another flight in exchange for a voucher. After a few weeks of playing this game, I had accumulated enough for two round trip tickets to Italy.)
This was our first trip with a digital camera and we committed the cardinal sin: bringing a brand new camera on vacation without learning how to use it first.
There’s a bit of a story behind this trip to Italy. I’d been traveling a lot for work, which involved returning home on Thursday nights. Without fail, every week the flight would be overbooked and they would ask for volunteers. I amassed a few thousand in flight vouchers, which we decided to cash in for a trip to Italy (Raleigh, NC to Rome).
We stayed at a small bed & breakfast at the Manzoni metro stop. It was cheap, the location was very convenient, and the room was quite large. The only negative was the shared bathroom.
We had two nights in Rome and visited the major sights: the Vatican, Sisteen Chapel (WOW!), the Forum, the Coliseum, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain.
Next stop: Sorrento and Pompeii
