Stromness, South Georgia – January 4th
54.1594° S, 36.7129° W
2 Celsius / 39 Fahrenheit – Mostly sunny
Stromness was an active whaling station until 1931 before finally being abandoned in 1961. The remnants of whaling infrastructure, such as dilapidated buildings and equipment, are off limits due to asbestos. There were plenty of fur seals and king penguins, but the highlight of this landing was the gentoo colony.
In ominous news, they announced at the nightly recap that there were several more people isolating due to covid, and they requested that we wear masks when possible. Ugh.
